Pontiac G8 – The Next Chevy Caprice?

Rumors floating throughout the Internetz suggest that Pontiac’s G8 may live on with a Chevy tag as a possible future Chevrolet Caprice Concept! How Exciting! The last Caprice we at Pontiacpedia really loved is the 1978-1980 version (pictured above), but we do have a crush on all boxy looking American made autos from that era.

General Motor’s on-again off-again marketing icon Bob Lutz has been quoted as saying the Pontiac G8 would find its way into Chevrolet showrooms as the Caprice. God, please don’t let this be a giant tease!

“The last time we looked at [the G8], we decided that we would continue to import it as a Chevrolet,” Lutz said. “It is kind of too good to waste.” But Lutz, citing export agreements with Australia and the fact that the Holden Commodore is already sold in many countries as a Chevrolet, assured Automobile GM would not let the car die.

There have been rumors that the Pontiac G8 is all but dead, along with the rest of GM’s make. But new rumors suggest G8 may live on. It seems General Motors can’t make up their mind about the ride – originally CEO Fritz Henderson said there was “no chance” Pontiac’s G8 will be rebranded – but now Automotive News reported GM’s Tom Stephens said the G8 “might survive with another GM badge.”

It would be great to see the 2009 Pontiac G8 continue as a Chevrolet sedan or sports car – maybe even a Buick! A flashier ride modeled off of G8 could be a rebirth of excitement with the Buick tag.

But with the US Economy heading straight down the crapper (still) we don’t see either brand heading into production with another sedan, especially when smaller, greener cars are the way to go these days. But we can hope there is still a chance G8 can make it as another GM brand.
